Make a backup of the private key and the SSL Certificate

It is possible that there are technical problems with your SSL Certificate. It is therefore always advisable to make a backup of the private key and the SSL Certificate. In that case, the certificate can be restored.

Step 1: Open the certificate store

  • You need to start the MMC by using Start > Run > type mmc.
  • Then go to the Console Tab > File > Add/Remove Snap-in.
  • Now select Computer Account and then Local Computer.
  • Choose Certificates and close the Add Standalone Snap-in window.
  • Now you need to click OK in the Add/Remove Snap-in window.
  • Then open the Certificates Console Tree.

Step 2: Exporting the SSL Certificate

  • Open the folder called Personal > Certificates.
  • Here you select the SSL Certificate from which a backup should be made.
  • Right click on the file and select All Tasks > Export.
  • The Certificate Export Wizard starts. Now click OK.
  • To export the private key click Export the private key and then click Next.
  • Keep the default settings and click Next.
  • You choose a password to secure the backup. Then click Next again.
  • You now need to specify where you want to save the backup. Choose a safe place.
  • You are finished. Click Finish.
  • When the export is successful "The export was successful" will be shown.
