DNS
Every website or web server on the internet has its own unique IP-address. The Domain Name System (DNS) translates domain names to IP-numbers. We use domain names because they are easier to remember than IP-numbers.
How DNS works
Hierarchy
DNS is organised out of one point (which is the highest level), called the DNS root. Underneath the root we find the Top Level Domain (TLDs) names like 'nl', 'com' and 'org'. Underneath these TLDs are the second level domain names, like 'networking4all' is the second level domain underneath the 'com' level.
Distribution
Every sub domain may use its own name server. It is not necessary to store all information at a central location.
Redundant
Every domain requires several name servers. For example the DNS root has 13 name servers and the 'nl' TLD has 7 at this point. To guarantee the availability of the Networking4all name servers we use several different locations throughout the Benelux. If all name servers for a domain name go down at once, the domain name will no longer be visible on the internet and e-mail for that domain name will bounce.
Addressses
Note!, the name servers are registered on different top level domains (ns1 on .com, ns2 on .net, ns3 on .org, ns4. info)
ns1.networking4all.com 199.254.31.254 | 2001:500:19::254
ns2.networking4all.net 199.254.56.254 | 2001:500:22::254
ns3.networking4all.org 199.254.53.254 | 2001:500:1f::254
ns4.networking4all.info 199.254.30.254 | 2001:500:18::254
