Wildcard SSL certificate
A Wildcard SSL certificate has the possibility to use a * in the domain name of the SSL certificate, this * can be replaced by any name as long as there is no . (dot) included.
For example, a Wildcard SSL certificate for the domain name *.yourcompany.com is also valid for the sub domains webmail.yourcompany.com, extranet.yourcompanyname.com or shop.yourcompanyname.com.
Advantage
-
Unlimited sub domain names can be secured by using one SSL certificate
Disadvantages
-
Limited mobile support, MS Windows Mobile 5.x has no support for Wildcard SSL certificates (version 6.x has)
-
Most brands require extra licenses for the use of a Wildcard SSL certificate on more than one server
Do you want a SSL certificate which is also valid for unlimited sub domains?
