Wildcard SSL certificate

A Wildcard SSL certificate has the possibility to use a * in the domain name of the SSL certificate, this * can be replaced by any name as long as there is no . (dot) included.

For example, a Wildcard SSL certificate for the domain name * is also valid for the sub domains, or


  • Unlimited sub domain names can be secured by using one SSL certificate


  • Limited mobile support, MS Windows Mobile 5.x has no support for Wildcard SSL certificates (version 6.x has)

  • Most brands require extra licenses for the use of a Wildcard SSL certificate on more than one server
