SSL Certificates VeriSign will be renamed to Symantec
The security business of Certificate Authority VeriSign, also
leader in SSL Certificates, is acquired by Symantec. The acquisition involved an amount of about 1 billion euros. When the acquisition in the next six to nine weeks is approved, VeriSign will disappear as brand name for SSL Certificates.
The new name for the leader will turn into Symantec, which, among other known is by virus protector Norton. The V in the logo of VeriSign, which is also used in the Site Seal, will partly go along with the new logo of Symantec. Until the takeover is approved, the name of the VeriSign will be used for the SSL Certificates. Symantec has stated that the brands GeoTrust and thawte will be preserved for the market.
Nothing will be changed for individuals or businesses with an SSL Certificate from VeriSign. There will be only a name change in the Site Seal and the distinctive pink color is replaced with yellow. The currently used and recognizable V will also be used by Symantec.
Symantec will not immediately be related to SSL Certificates by internet users. It will, therefore, need time to build a similar name such as VeriSign has done for web site security in the last twenty years. Symantec, on the other hand, has a great recognition with the users because of products like Norton AntiVirus or Internet Security.
