Networking4all was today the first to be officially accredited as ‘.eu registrar’. As such Networking4all becomes the first company in the Netherlands entitled to register .eu domain names (for third parties) with EURid, the body charged with the administration and allocation of .eu-domain names.
Registration of the domain names is expected to begin within a few months. From 11.00 am last Thursday, parties wishing to be accredited were able to apply. “After submitting our application we headed straight off to Brussels to hand over the contracts to EURid, the official body for .eu domain allocation,” said Paul van Brouwershaven, Technical manager at Networking4all. “We've since received all the relevant information from EURid and are currently in the process of linking up our system with the EURid.”
The official launch date for registering .eu-domain names is not yet known. According to EURid it will most probably be in October 2005, which is when the so-called Sunrise Period will begin. This period is divided into two segments lasting two months each. During the first two months public institutions, companies and individuals with a registered national trademark will be eligible to apply for a domain name. In the subsequent two months holders of other rights or entitlements applicable according to the national law of member states will be able to register their domain names. The general launch date will be announced two months after the Sunrise Period begins. Expectations are that it will be possible for everyone to apply for a .eu domain name around January/February 2006.
Networking4all is to offer .eu registration for
€ 9.50 per year, the same price charged for other popular Top Level Domains. This price is lower than the purchase price of € 10.00 payable by Networking4all to EURid.
