Worldwide 220 million domain names registered
With the approaching new year, VeriSign has released a new Domain Name Industry Brief. It shows that the total number of registered domain names worldwide nearly reached the 220 million at the end of the third quarter of 2011.
Barely one year ago, it passed the historic milestone of two hundred million registered domain names. Since then the major domain extensions remained unchanged in number. The most registered extension is still .com and .de (Germany), .net, .uk (United Kingdom) and .org complete the top five.
The third quarter saw an increase of 4,9 million registrations over the second quarter. That number represents 2,3 percent. With a number of 112 million domain names, .com and .net do have more than the half of the total number of domain names.
The Dutch extension .nl dropped one place in the ranking of VeriSign. The new number seven is .tk (Tokelau), which makes the Netherlands the eighth largest extension. Meaning that it still has more registrations than .ru (Russian Federation, ninth place) and .eu (European Union, tenth place).
