Registered .nl domain names towards five million
SIDN, administrator of the Dutch .nl domain, has announced its figures for 2011. These figures show that the extension reached almost five million registrations. This past year, the number of domain names has grown from 4,2 to 4,8 million.
The 607.000 new .nl domain names represent an increase of 14,5 percent. Especially in July, when SIDN could add 105.701 new registrations, the Dutch extension grew substantially. The increase of 14,5 percent in 2011 is slightly more than in 2010, when the domain grew fourteen percent. The .nl domain counter is currently at 4.810.927 names.
Despite the growth in 2011, the Dutch extension dropped one place in the 'world ranking'. At the end of 2010, VeriSign announced that the new number seven is .tk (Tokelau), which makes .nl the eight largest extension in the ranking of major extensions. Meaning that it still has more registrations than .ru (Russian Federation, ninth place) and .eu (European Union, tenth place).
