| Extra information |
.travel is a top-level domain approved by ICANN on April 8, 2005, as a sponsored TLD in the second group of new TLD applications evaluated in 2004. It is restricted to the use of travel agents, airlines, bed and breakfast operators, tourism bureaus, and others in the travel industry. It is sponsored by Tralliance Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of TheGlobe.com.
The official launch began in October 2005, with a screening process to determine eligibility to register domains in each of three monthly groups for October, November, and December. Normal registrations began in January 2006.
The first organization to launch a website utilizing the domain name is the Egyptian Tourist Authority, with their website "http://www.egypt.travel". The site was launched in March of 2006 and is intended to be a one-stop shop for information on Egypt.
All holders of a .travel name must be approved to hold a .travel name by having their eligibility reviewed. That review of eligibility is called "authentication." All authentication is confirmed by a participating national organization or through TRAP (Tralliance Authentication Providers). You will be sent a Unique Identifying Number (UIN). You will use that number when you register any .travel names in the future. Your UIN is permanent and will not change. It may be revoked if your eligibility changes. |
