Only companies and organisations registered in the Norway's "Central Coordinating Register for Legal Entities" may register a ".no domain name. Besides this the relevant company or organisation has to have a Norwegian postal address. One company or organisation may have up to 20 domain names directly within ".no". An organisation may also have up to 5 domain names under each geographical domain to which the organization belongs, as well as 5 domain names under each second-level domain to which the organisation belongs. However, there is one exception to this rule: private individuals may register a domain name under the subdomain ".priv.no". Therefore the individual has to be registered in the National Registry with a Norwegian national identity number, has to be 18 years or older and has to have a Norwegian post address. An individual may have up to 5 domain names under ".priv.no". The registry introduced Second-Level Domains in order to divide domain names in several groups. These subdomains are listed under the paragraph "subdomains" and are all available unless stated else. Here is also the purpose of the subdomain given. Not that an applicant doesn't have to register under a Second-Level domain. A museum can be registered under "museum.no", but also under ".no". |

Certain expressions may not be registered within the ".no" domain. These expressions include pornographic, defamatory or discriminatory expressions. Next, the following words are not permitted: "ftp", "localhost", "whois" and "www". Finally it is not allowed to register several domain names which contain geographical terms (counties, islands, regions, municipalities, cities, towns and villages). However, the registry made about 200+ geographical Second-Level Domains available. Networking4all has chosen not to display these subdomains since this wouldn't be a useful overview. Despite this we will give a few examples of these Second-Level Domains: "oslo.no" for Oslo, "va.no" for Vest-Agder, "bryne.no" for Bryne, "mandal.no" for Mandal and "ulvik.no" for Ulvik. Note that the geographical Second-Level Domains can only be registered by a local organisation who represents the corresponding geographic area. The same applies for the municipalities, cities, towns and villages: these can only be registered by the relevant municipality. Finally, the same applies for the counties.
