All Ministries, government Departments, central and provincial organizations from Sri Lanka are allowed to register a ".gov.lk" domain name. Ministries: All Ministries should have “min” at the end of the name. The name could be a keyword identifying the Ministry, or an abbreviation, the structure. An example: educationmin.gov.lk. Departments: All existing departments and any new departments shall have “dept” or “-dept” at the end of the domain name. An example: electionsdept.gov.lk Provincial Councils: Provincial Councils and Provincial Council Ministries shall use the acronym of the Province. Two examples: educationmin.wp.gov.lk (western province) and electionsdept.sp.gov.lk (southern province). Pradeshiya Sabha: All Pradeshiaya Sabhas shall use the city or known name at the fourth level and “ps” at the third level. An example: colombo.ps.gov.lk. District Secretariat: All District Secretariats shall use the District Secretariat name at the fourth level of the domain and “dist” at the third level. An example: colombo.dist.gov.lk. Divisional Secretariat: All Divisional Secretariats shall use the divisional secretariat name at the fourth level and “ds” at the third level of the domain. An example: colombo.ds.gov.lk. Municipal Council: All Municipal Councils shall use the city or known name at the fourth level and “mc” at the third level. An example: kandy.mc.gov.lk. Urban Council: All Urban Councils shall use the city or known name at the fourth level and “uc” at the third level. An example: kolonnawa.uc.gov.lk. SL Missions Abroad: All Missions shall use the city name at the fourth level and “mission” at the third level. An example: tokyo. mission.gov.lk. Registered trademarks, trademarks used in Sri Lanka but not registered, registered companies or businesses, commonly known organisations and entities assigned by statute may register a ".lk" domain name. Individuals may also register a ".lk" domain name, but then the purpose has to be similar to the following: professionals, artistes and political candidates. In case of the political candidate, the applicant has to submit a letter signed by the candidate. In order to complete the domain name registration, the applicant has to send a send a letter in the official letter head of the requesting organization with the information shown below: - Name of the domain to be reserved. - Name of the organisation. - Relevant Registration number of the organisation. - Reason for choosing this name. - Name, designation, address, telephone, fax and e-mail of the person to contact regarding this domain. For the subdomains ".com.lk", ".org.lk" and ".edu.lk" apply the same restrictions as stated above. But besides these restrictions, these subdomains have a different purpose. Under ".org.lk" may only register non-profit organisations for example. Under the paragraph "subdomains" you can find the different purposes. The registry suggests that the domain name is identical to the name of the organisation, is an abbreviation of the name of the organisation or is identical to the commonly known name of the organisation. However, there is an exception, this is in case that the that chosen name has been assigned to another organisation, or is commonly used by another organisation. Names should not include trademarks of other parties or words which are not permitted in business names, unless the applicant is legally entitled to use such words. Names which are offensive, obscene, or may confuse or grossly mislead the public, should not be selected. Neither may the domain name be against the applicable law. All registrations under the top-level domain ensure that the domain name is blocked in all the open second levels provided the second level domain is available. If the applicants wishes to use the open second level domain names (".com.lk", ".org.lk" and "edu.lk") in addition to the top level domain, it can be done by configuring DNS entries for the open second level domain, but DNS for both top level and second level should be hosted on the same machine. The registration may be renewed at the end of the year.
