Any individual, group, or organisation that has a permanent postal address in Japan may apply for a ".jp" domain name.
The ".jp" domain name supports IDN.
Besides Japanese domain names, it's also possible to register a domain name with Latin characters. However, in both situations there are other restrictions:
Japanese domain names:
- contain only Japanese characters.
- consists of one till fiftheen (1-15) characters.
- may not contain a dash on the third and fourth position.
Latin domain names:
- contain letters (a-z), number (0-9) and hypens (-), or a combination of these.
- consists of three till sixty-three (3-63) characters.
- start and end with an alphanumeric character, not a dash.
- do not contain a dash on the 3rd and 4th position (tagged domains).
