Transfers

At least four parties are involved in a Provider Change. They are the DENIC member who has been administering the domain to date (old provider), Networking4all B.V., the DENIC member who is to take over its administration in future, the domain holder and DENIC. If either the provider to date and/or the future provider are not DENIC members, then they will also be involved in the process (in addition to the member they work with).

You, the domain holder start the provider-change process by telling your old or current provider that you want a new provider (Networking4all B.V.) to administer your domain in the future. The next step is for Networking4all to send a Provider Change application to DENIC. Before submitting any such application, Networking4all has a duty to make sure that the change was really initiated by the bona-fide domain holder.

Next, DENIC sends the Provider Change to the member who has been in charge of the domain to date with a request for confirmation. This member checks whether he/she has received any information about the domain holder wanting to change. If so, he/she sends an ACK (acknowledged) to DENIC confirming the domain holder's wish to change providers. If not, he/she rejects the Provider Change with a NACK (not acknowledged).

You will see that this process includes two separate checks to make sure that a domain is not transferred from one provider to another as a result of a misunderstanding. Both the DENIC members involved have a duty to perform these checks with care.

If the DENIC member who had been in charge of the domain to date does not reply within three working days, DENIC sends him/her the same question again in the form of a REMINDER. If there is still no reaction, DENIC deems the member releasing the domain to have acknowledged the correctness of the first check as carried out by the future provider. At this stage, the Provider Change will be completed and the entries in DENIC’s database will be correspondingly updated. After seven days at the latest (according to current practice) the Provider Change will have been completed even in such a case. The procedure just described has been deliberately set up like this to ensure that requests for provider changes can be dealt with quickly.

It can happen that the DENIC member releasing the domain doesn’t yet know that the domain holder wants a change at the time he/she receives the request to acknowledge the Provider Change from DENIC. In such instances, the member answers as a precaution with a NACK. As soon as the domain holder’s wish to change reaches the member, it is still possible to send an acknowledgement to DENIC. This is known as a LATEACK, and three months are allowed for this to take place. A LATEACK does not need the formal Provider Change process to be initiated again by the member taking over administration of the domain.

Extra information

In order to register a .de domain name, the administrative contact person should live in Germany.

Attention! Private individuals or companies who don't have an administrative contact person in Germany can rely on our contact person. This is only for the administrative contact person, so you will be the full owner of the domain name. In other words: any company, organisation or private individual can register a .de domain name and register their company name, product or trade mark in Germany.

In Germany, almost no-one opts for a .com domain name and 90% of the Germans own a .de domain. This means that German people who are browsing the internet, looking for a site or product, will not easily enter a .com domain or any other extension. So if you want to conquer the German market, it might be interesting to register one or more .de domain names.

Furthermore, the .de extension is the second largest extension worldwide (n° 1 is the .com domain extension).

Nameservers
Please take into account that the German Registry formulated strict rules concerning the use of personal name servers for .de domain names. Therefore, nameservers have to be located in a different subnet and the SOA-values have to be measured in following bandwith:
- refresh 10000 - 86400
- retry: 1800 - 28800
- expire: 604800 - 3600000
- ttl: 180 - 345600
You can of course use the default Networking4all name servers.
