The national flag of Yemen was adopted on May 22, 1990, the same day that North Yemen and South Yemen unified. The pattern of red, white and black stripes was also present on the flags of North and South Yemen, symbolizing Pan-Arabism, as are the flags of Egypt, Syria, Iraq among others.
According to the official description, the red stands for the bloodshed of martyrs and unity; the white for a bright future; black for the dark past.
The Flag of Yemen is also the horizontal inverse of the Flag of the German Empire. |

Yemen, officially the Republic of Yemen is a Middle Eastern country located on the Arabian Peninsula in Southwest Asia. With a population of about 20 million people, Yemen is bordered by Saudi Arabia to the North, the Red Sea to the West, the Arabian Sea and Gulf of Aden to the South, and Oman to the east. Yemen's territory includes over 200 islands, the largest of which is Socotra, about 415 kilometres (260 miles) to the south of Yemen, off the coast of Somalia. It is the only republic on the Arabian Peninsula. |
