| Flag explanation: |
The national flag of Nepal is one of only two non-rectangular official jurisdictional flags in the world (the other being the state flag of Ohio, USA). The flag is a simplified combination of two single pennants from different branches of the previous rulers, the Rana dynasty.
The flag was adopted, with the formation of a new constitutional government, on December 16, 1962. The individual pennants had been used for the preceding two centuries and the double pennant since the 19th century. The flag borrows the basic design from the origiHindu design, which has been in use for more than 2,000 years.
The blue border denotes peace and harmony that has been prevalent in the country since the age of Gautama Buddha, who was born in Nepal. The crimson colour is Nepal's national colour, and it indicates the brave spirit of the Nepalese people. The two triangles symbolize the Himalaya Mountains and represent the two major religions, Hinduism and Buddhism. The red triangular flag has been a Hindu symbol of victory since the time of Ramayana and Mahabharata. The depiction of celestial bodies represents permanence, the hope that Nepal will last as long as the sun and the moon. The moon symbolises that the Nepalese are soothing and calm, while the sun symbolises fierce resolve. The moon also symbolises the shades and the cool weather of the Himlayas whereas, the sun symbolises the hotness and the high temperature at the lower part (Tarai) of Nepal. |

Nepal is a landlocked nation in South Asia, bordering the People's Republic of China (Tibet) to the north and India to the south, east and west.
Until 2006, Nepal, with over eighty percent of its population Hindu, was officially a Hindu state, the only one in the world. On May 18, 2006, Nepal was declared a secular state. On December 28, 2007, the interim parliament passed a bill and declared Nepal to be a federal democratic republic. The current king, Gyanendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev, will be the last king of Nepal if the present ruling parties win the April 2008 elections.
For a relatively small country, the Nepali landscape is uncommonly diverse, ranging from the humid Terai in the south to the lofty Himalayas in the north. Nepal boasts of eight of the world's ten highest mountains, including the Mount Everest.
After a long and rich history, during which the region splintered and coalesced under a variety of absolute rulers, Nepal became a constitutional monarchy in 1990. In December 2007, its parliament voted to abolish the monarchy in Nepal. |
