| Flag explanation: |
The flag of Norfolk Island was adopted on October 21, 1980. It depicts the Norfolk Island Pine (Araucaria heterophylla).
It is somewhat similar to the flag of Canada, with its use of only two colours and the use of a prominent local symbol in the middle. It also has 1:2 size ratio. The central panel though, is not a Canadian pale, which must be half the width of the whole flag (a square); the flag's geometry is that of a more traditional tricolour. |

Norfolk Island (Norfuk: Norfuk Ailen) is a small inhabited island in the Pacific Ocean located between Australia, New Zealand and New Caledonia. It and two neighbouring islands form one of Australia's external territories.
The Norfolk Island pine, a symbol of the island pictured in its flag, is a striking evergreen tree native to the island and is quite popular in Australia, where two related species also grow. |
