The national flag of Latvia was re-adopted on February 27, 1990. The same flag was used by independent Latvia from 1918 until the country was annexed by the Soviet Union in 1940; post-Soviet Latvia sees itself as the same state as pre-Soviet Latvia, not merely a successor state.
Latvia, officially the Republic of Latvia, is a country in Northern Europe. Latvia shares land borders with Estonia to the north and Lithuania to the south — and both Russia and Belarus to the east. It is separated from Sweden in the west by the Baltic Sea. The capital of Latvia is Riga. Latvia has been a member state of the European Union since May 1, 2004.
