General information The Caribbean Netherlands
The BES islands are the islands of Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba. These islands functioning since October 10, 2010 as special municipalities within the country the Netherlands. Until that date the islands were part of the islands regions of the Netherlands Antilles, a former country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
Bonaire (Papiamento: Boneiru) is located in the southern part of the Caribbean Sea, off the coast of Venezuela. The capital of Bonaire is Kralendijk, a corruption of Corals Dike (dyke of coral).
Sint Eustatius and Saba are geographically part of the Leeward Islands, including Guadeloupe and Saint Martin. The capital city of Sint Eustatius is Oranjestad. The island is named after Saint Eustachius, it is called by locals Statia. The capital of Saba is The Bottom.
